ETHICS IN ONLINE JOURNALISM

The Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists and Minnesota Public Radio’s UBS Forum offer an examination of where online journalism is and where it’s going.

Host Bob Collins, the creator of MPR’s News Cut blog will be joined by Dan Gillmor, director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School for Journalism and Mass Communications.

The forum also includes a stable of ethics experts, bloggers, editors and reporters to help guide the audience to a better understanding of what’s possible and what’s at stake.

The Minnesota Journalism Center is pleased to co-sponsor "From the
Presidential Archives: the story of private polling and its implications
for American democracy" featuring Lawrence Jacobs. The lecture will take
place on Monday, September 17, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. in Wilson Library, 4th
floor.

The event celebrates the 100th
anniversary of the University’s Government Publications Library’s
official federal depository status. Documents from the Library’s
collection will be on display at the event. Jacobs is is the Walter F.
and Joan Mondale Chair for Political Studies and Director of the Center
for the Study of Politics and Governance in the Hubert H. Humphrey
Institute at the University of Minnesota. He is also Professor in the
Department of Political Science. His books include Inequality and
American Democracy, Healthy, Wealthy, and Fair, and Politicians Don’t
Pander: Political Manipulation and the Loss of Democratic
Responsiveness.

This event is co-sponsored by the Friends of the
University of Minnesota Libraries, the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of
Public Affairs, Minnesota Journalism Center, the Center for Urban and
Regional Affairs, and the departments of History and Political Science.

Without Fear or Favor: Objectivity Revisited

UBS Forum at Minnesota Public Radio

SPJ will host a thought-provoking panel discussion that will explore the role of objectivity in modern journalism. Can any journalist be truly objective?

Are we moving back to an era of more partisan journalism? Is there way too much “he said, she said journalism” today? How do changes in technology, advertising and media ownership affect journalistic objectivity? The panelists will tackle these questions and many more.

The event will feature as lead panelist Stephen Ward, acting director and associate professor of journalism at the University of British Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism. Ward is author of the award-winning 2006 book “The Invention of Journalism Ethics: The Path to Objectivity and Beyond.”

The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Space is limited, so we urge you to make reservations as soon as possible.

Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence in Public Affairs Journalism

New Format!
Please join the Minnesota Journalism Center as we celebrate the 30th annual Frank Premack Public Affiairs Journalism Awards. The Premack Awards will have a new format this year, as we will bring together the award winners with a distinguished panel of experts for a symposium to discuss the importance of public affairs journalism in Minnesota. The sumposium will feature Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak. Participants will include the 2007 winners of the Premack Awards as well as a panel of journalists and educators.

A Q&A session will follow the panel discussion.

The Premack Symposium is free of charge and open to the public.

October 15-17. The 2006 conference will be by invitation only and will feature Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke as keynote speaker.

The workshop returns to Minneapolis in June 2007 with an open application process. Information about the 2007 conference will be available in January 2007.

David Carr writes a column for the Monday Business section of the New York Times that focuses on media issues including print, digital, film, radio and television. He also works as a general assignment reporter in the Culture section of The New York Times covering all aspects of popular culture. Carr began working at the Times in 2002 covering the magazine publishing industry for the Business section. Prior to arriving in New York, Carr served as editor of the Washington City Paper, an alternative weekly in Washington D.C. for five years. During that time, he wrote a column, "Paper Trail," which focused on media issues in the nation's capital. In 1997, Carr received first place in the media category of the Association of Alternative Weeklies annual awards for "Good News..." From 1993 to 1995, Carr was editor of the Twin Cities Reader, a Minneapolis-based alternative weekly, and wrote a media column there as well.
