  Minnesota Journalism Center Home   Conference Center

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication Conference Center was completed in January 2000, as part of the $9.25 million Murphy Hall Renovation Project. The conference center was funded through the University of Minnesota's New Media Initiative, which established programs preparing students for the rapidly changing media environment, especially in the new communications technologies, and will serve the needs of one of the fastest growing sectors of the American (and Minnesota) economy.
 
   
 

The state-of-the-art conference center is the showpiece of the renovated Murphy Hall, serving as an outreach resource for internal and external groups for conferences, workshops and other activities.

Adjacent to the SJMC Conference Center is the Heggen Room, a smaller meeting/dining facility that is perfect for groups of up to 16 people.

If you are interested in reserving the SJMC Conference Center or Heggen Room for your next event, contact the events coordinator at 612-626-1723 or e-mail saube014@umn.edu.

The conference center contains 32 seats, tables with Internet connections, a rear-screen projected computer, DVD, VCR, cable TV, HDTV (broadcast and videotape playback) and a document camera. The conference center is also equipped for audio and video conferencing with two remote controlled cameras and a control room with switching equipment connected to three ISDN lines. Audience members can easily participate in any discussion with the desktop microphones.

Since opening, the SJMC Conference Center has averaged 20 events per month.
